Australia visits Wimbledon
Australia visits Wimbledon. In early May two talented and distinguished Australian Jews from Melbourne will be honouring our community with talks on which they are internationally renowned experts:
On Thursday evening ,May 10th 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. Dr Joseph Epstein father figure of emergency medicine in Australia and internationally reputed and a speaker throughout Europe, Asia, Australasia, North and south America will be talking to us about “ Emergency Medicine”. Joe will not be talking about medicine in an emergency but in situations of disasters. national and man made. Started with forest fires and floods in his native Australia and has now spread. Joe has had his own research facility founded by him and named after him” The Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine” based in the Sunshine Hospital, Melbourne, He established the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine back in 1991 and has subsequently received the AM ( Order of Australia) as well as in 2001 the Centenary Medal in recognition of his work by the Australian Federal government. His family arrived in Melbourne in September 1939 having managed to escape just in time from Poland and joined an uncle already there. His family developed a very prosperous and successful business in water sprinkling equipment to the extent that at the age of 8 Joe himself was an accomplished fitter and turner. His career however turned into the field of medicine..The aims of his department are:
- A) provide high quality clinical research in the areas of emergency medicine and pre-hospitalisation care.
- B) Developing partnerships in regional,inter-state, national and international areas across disciplines: ambulance,medical, nursing,community
- C) providing educational support for pre-hospitalisation for emergency medicine
- D) developing the transfer of information to improve practise.
Joe’s talk will demonstrate all of this and more in the laconic manner in which he speaks. A very instructive and informative and humorous evening is promised.
The next morning May 11th at 10.30 a.m. the Art & Literature group is pleased to announce that they will be having Joe’s better half Jan Epstein to give us a talk on : Swastikas for luck: how a Larrikin Jewish comic helped shape Australia’s identity Mo Mcackie )”. Jan is a leading Australian film critic ,writer since 1989 and is the critic for both the Australian Jewish News and the Australian Catholic News. Jan researches films world wide and is a regular attendee at the Cannes Film Festival.
This talented couple have a son who is a leading broadcaster and journalist in Australia and Joe’s sister Anna is Curator of the Jewish Museum in Melbourne, one of the most impressive in the world and well worth the trip to St.Kilda when you are next in Australia. “
