Hebrew For Worship
No matter what your level of knowledge you'll find a Hebrew / Ivrit class for you here.
Adult Hebrew Lessons
These classes run each year, and starts from learning the Hebrew alphabet (or, more appropriately, Aleph-Bet), and gradually builds up the ability to read. Once we get beyond the basic learning of letters and vowels, we use texts from the Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services – so creating immediate relevance and usefulness for the learning. Our aim is that, after three terms of six lessons, a student will be able to follow along in a service, and participate on a greater level. The course focuses centrally on ‘reading’, with minimal amounts of grammar and translation. For those who want to, these are available in the ‘Introduction to Classical Hebrew’ class (see below).
For further information, please contact the office by clicking here or email Daniel Borin who leads these classes by clicking here.
Introduction to Classical Hebrew
After completing the Beginners Hebrew you can continue and learn the rules of biblical grammar. Quite soon, you will be able to understand the meaning of many of our prayers. Understanding the Torah takes a little longer. At the end of the year, you should be able to translate some biblical passages with help. If people want it, a Bible translation course will be set up the following year.
Classes take place on Tuesday nights during term from 7.00 –8.00p.m.and are taught by Rabbi Sybil Sheridan.
